This is a fearful prediction that most of the local people of 9 Unions of Rupganj, a Thana under Narayanganj, could be displaced completely in the next 5-10 years. Almost 90% of arable and marshy lands have been encroached and already been filled with sands by several housing companies. Besides, the ongoing ‘Purbachal New City Mega Project’ on 6150 acre land have allegedly taken 5-7people’s lives dislocating 99% of the local community. Most of these people had no means to settle down elsewhere. Few of them, though managing plots in the project, have been forced to sell those to housing agents. A big portion who their lost homes and cultivable lands have yet to get any plot from the Government. Most of these people were involved in cultivation and have been settled—now living a floating life in economic poverty and dejection with no bounds.
