On 25 July 1971, the Sohagpur genocide occurred in the village of Sohagpur in the Mymensingh district of East Pakistan (now Sherpur District, Bangladesh). This tragic event took place during the Bangladesh Liberation War when 187 people were massacred by the Pakistani military. Hafiza Bewa, a resident of Sohagpur, was married at the age of 14 to Ibrahim, the only child of a widowed mother. During the massacre, the Pakistani Army, guided by local collaborators, killed 181 villagers, including Hafiza’s husband, uncle, and cousin. On that misfortune day, Hafiza’s husband was brutally murdered, leaving her drenched in his blood. Although she survived by hiding, Hafiza lost her entire family. After the war, she returned to find her home destroyed and now spends her remaining days haunted by the memories, endlessly searching the fields for the faces of her lost loved ones.
